Most would consider retirement after an NFL career in which you kicked two field goals in the Super Bowl a viable option, but not for Frank Corral -- a Riverside, CA resident, labor union member, and recent alum of the Wellstone Action Labor Program. Frank was born in Mexico, moved to LA where he lived until the age of 14, and then moved to Riverside, the place he'd call home. Coming from a working class family, Frank was aware of the struggles of the hardworking men and women of Southern California. Fortunately, Frank excelled in sports and was able to land an athletic scholarship to UCLA where he played football before being drafted to the NFL.
Following his impressive football career, Frank decided to return to Riverside where he married, and then pursued a career through the city as a Graffiti Eradications Coordinator. Frank is also a member of the Service Employees International Union, and works to give back to his community, working with youth from local schools through the Public Educations Program on graffiti, or PEP. Currently, Frank serves as the Graffiti Controls Officer of Riverside, a role he considers critical to building a healthy, sustainable community for all.
Earlier this year, Frank attended a training with the Wellstone Action Labor Program and SEIU's Member Candidate Program to gain political organizing skills. Following this training, Frank is considering a run for a Riverside City Council seat so he can build on his work in the city and represent his community. He hopes to be able to work on improving the streets of Riverside and help to make the community a safer place for youth. Frank said that his training through Wellstone Action's Labor Training Program "was an eye-opening experience in teaching me how to organize and finance a campaign." He also said that the trainers gave him the skills necessary to build the relationships and organize as he makes his decision about running for public office.
Frank and his wife Sheri are true community leaders, raising a family of 12 children and organizing in their community. Sheri chairs the Police Review Committee in Riverside and together they are active volunteers in the Riverside Fútbol Club, a soccer program which also serves as a youth leadership development program aimed at encouraging young people to make a positive impact.
Frank is passionate about the importance of giving back to the community, and the effects of "paying it forward". Whether as a City Council member or a community leader (or both!), he will continue to work and organize for change and make a real difference in his community.
